PERKESO LINDUNG 24 Jam vs Personal Accident Insurance guide for Malaysian employees and employers

If you already have Personal Accident (PA) insurance, you might be wondering whether PERKESO LINDUNG 24 Jam gives you the same protection, or whether you're paying twice for something you already have.

While both can protect you after an accident, they work quite differently. Here's what LINDUNG 24 Jam covers, how PA insurance may provide different protection, and what happens if you need to make a claim.

What Is PERKESO LINDUNG 24 Jam?

PERKESO LINDUNG 24 Jam is a social security scheme that protects employees against eligible non-work-related accidents, such as accidents that happen outside working hours.

It extends PERKESO protection beyond workplace accidents, providing eligible benefits for accidents that happen during an employee's personal time.

For a more detailed explanation of what the scheme covers, exclusions, contribution rates and employer responsibilities, read our complete guide to SOCSO LINDUNG 24 Jam.

LINDUNG 24 Jam vs Personal Accident Insurance

Personal insurance can mean many things. A medical card, life insurance and PA insurance do not provide the same protection.

For a clearer comparison, we're comparing LINDUNG 24 Jam mainly against Personal Accident (PA) insurance.

Comparison of PERKESO LINDUNG 24 Jam and Personal Accident Insurance in Malaysia, including accident coverage, disability benefits, rehabilitation, overseas coverage and cost

The main thing to understand is that neither automatically replaces the other. LINDUNG 24 Jam is a social security scheme tied to employment, while PA insurance is private protection based on the policy you purchase.

Key Differences Between LINDUNG 24 Jam and PA Insurance

This is where simply asking "Do both cover accidents?" can be misleading. They may cover similar accidents, but what happens after the accident can be quite different.

1. LINDUNG 24 Jam is tied to your employment

LINDUNG 24 Jam covers you as long as you remain employed and participate in the scheme.

A personal PA policy is generally tied to you. This means changing jobs or taking a career break does not necessarily end your PA protection, as long as your policy remains active.

2. Overseas accidents are not covered by LINDUNG 24 Jam

If you have an accident while travelling outside Malaysia, LINDUNG 24 Jam does not cover it.

Some PA policies offer 24-hour worldwide protection, although coverage varies between insurance plans.

3. The way permanent disability is compensated is different

With PA insurance, you usually choose a sum insured. If an accident leaves you permanently disabled, the payout is generally determined by that amount and the percentage assigned to your disability under the policy.

LINDUNG 24 Jam works differently. PERKESO assesses the degree of permanent disability, with the benefit determined based on the disability assessment, wages and age.

If the permanent disability is assessed at 20% or below, the benefit may be paid as a lump sum. If it is assessed at more than 20%, one-fifth may be paid as a lump sum, while the remaining benefit is paid monthly for life.

4. LINDUNG 24 Jam includes rehabilitation support

Compensation isn't the only support available. Eligible employees can receive rehabilitation support such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, prosthetics, orthotics, wheelchairs and other eligible assistance. This can help an employee recover and, where possible, return to work.

Whether equivalent rehabilitation support is available under PA insurance depends on the policy.

5. Private hospital treatment may not be fully reimbursed

If you receive treatment at a PERKESO panel clinic or government clinic or hospital for a qualifying accident, the treatment is covered under the scheme.

But if you choose a non-panel clinic or private hospital, you should not assume PERKESO will reimburse the entire private bill. PERKESO allows reimbursement claims, but payment is subject to its prescribed rate or the equivalent rate charged by government hospitals.

So if your private hospital bill comes to RM5,000, that does not automatically mean PERKESO will reimburse RM5,000.

How Much Does LINDUNG 24 Jam Actually Pay?

There isn't one fixed payout because the benefit depends on what happens after the accident.

If You Need Medical Treatment

For a qualifying accident, eligible employees can receive medical treatment at a PERKESO panel clinic, government clinic or hospital. For serious injuries, treatment is provided through a government hospital, including second-class ward treatment and specialist treatment where necessary.

If you choose private treatment instead, you may apply for reimbursement, but the amount is subject to PERKESO's applicable rates.

If You Can't Work Temporarily

If your accident leaves you unable to work, you may qualify for Temporary Disablement Benefit.

Your certified medical leave must be at least four days, including the day of the accident. PERKESO states that this benefit may also be payable if you attend work and receive wages.

This benefit provides income support while you're temporarily unable to work after a qualifying accident. It is separate from payment for your medical treatment.

If You Become Permanently Disabled

If the accident leaves you permanently disabled, you may qualify for Permanent Disablement Benefit.

PERKESO assesses the degree of permanent disability rather than paying everyone the same amount.

The amount payable depends on the degree of permanent disability assessed by PERKESO and the applicable LINDUNG 24 Jam benefit rules.

For serious permanent disability, this can therefore work very differently from a PA policy that pays a predetermined percentage of a chosen sum insured.

If You Need Rehabilitation

Eligible employees may receive physical or vocational rehabilitation, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and eligible rehabilitation equipment.

If an employee is permanently and totally disabled and requires constant personal care, a RM500 monthly Constant Attendance Allowance may also be available, subject to PERKESO's assessment and conditions.

If the Accident Results in Death

If an employee dies because of a qualifying non-work accident, eligible dependants may receive Dependants' Benefit. Eligible funeral expenses may also be covered, up to RM3,000, subject to PERKESO's conditions.

Example: What Happens After a Weekend Accident?

Let's say Amir gets into a motorcycle accident on Sunday while meeting his friends.

Because the accident happened during his personal time and was not work-related, it may fall under LINDUNG 24 Jam.

1. Amir needs medical treatment

He can receive eligible treatment through a PERKESO panel clinic or government healthcare facility. If he chooses a private hospital, he can submit a reimbursement claim, but the full private hospital bill is not automatically covered.

2. Amir receives 14 days of MC

He cannot work while recovering. Because his certified medical leave exceeds the four-day requirement, he may qualify for Temporary Disablement Benefit for the eligible period.

3. Amir does not fully recover

If the accident leaves him with a permanent disability, PERKESO can assess the degree of disability and determine whether Permanent Disablement Benefit is payable. He may also qualify for rehabilitation support.

4. Amir already has PA insurance

That does not automatically prevent him from receiving eligible LINDUNG 24 Jam benefits. He can separately check whether his PA policy also covers the accident and what benefits he can claim under that policy.

This is why having two forms of accident protection does not necessarily mean they provide the same benefits.

Can I Opt Out of LINDUNG 24 Jam?

Yes. LINDUNG 24 Jam is now voluntary for local employees. It remains mandatory for foreign workers.

If you have opted out and later decide to participate again, PERKESO provides a participation status update process for employees and employers.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is LINDUNG 24 Jam the same as Personal Accident Insurance?

No. LINDUNG 24 Jam is a PERKESO social security scheme, while Personal Accident Insurance is a private insurance product. They differ in benefit structure, coverage, and claim assessment.

2. Can I claim LINDUNG 24 Jam if I already have private insurance?

Yes. Having private insurance or an employer-provided medical card does not automatically stop you from receiving eligible LINDUNG 24 Jam benefits. Any separate claim against your private insurance is subject to your insurer's policy terms and conditions.

3. Does LINDUNG 24 Jam replace my medical card?

No. They serve different purposes. LINDUNG 24 Jam provides social security protection following a qualifying non-work accident. A medical card generally covers eligible medical and hospital expenses according to the insurance policy.

4. What happens to my LINDUNG 24 Jam coverage if I resign?

LINDUNG 24 Jam protection is tied to being an employed worker. The contribution is fully borne by the employee, while the employer deducts and remits the applicable contribution to PERKESO on the employee's behalf. A personal PA policy can generally continue independently of your employer, provided the policy remains active.

5. Does LINDUNG 24 Jam cover accidents overseas?

No. Accidents outside Malaysia are excluded. Some PA insurance policies provide worldwide coverage, but you should check your own policy.

6. What if my accident happens while I'm working?

Work-related accidents fall under PERKESO's Employment Injury Scheme, rather than LINDUNG 24 Jam. LINDUNG 24 Jam is specifically for qualifying accidents that do not arise from your employment.

What Should Employers Know?

For employers, the key is making sure employees understand how LINDUNG 24 Jam participation and payroll deductions work. It should also be clear that LINDUNG 24 Jam does not replace an employee’s medical card or Personal Accident insurance, as each provides different types of protection.
